Jon Davies is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow in History at Carleton University, Ottawa (2025\u201327). He received his PhD in Art History from Stanford University in 2023 with the dissertation “The Fountain: Art, Sex and Queer Pedagogy in San Francisco, 1945\u201395.” After living for a long time in Toronto and then the Bay Area, he is back home in Montr\u00e9al.<\/h4>\n

Vtape is presenting a program of videos from Colin Campbell and Lisa Steele’s time in Los Angeles<\/a> on e-flux<\/a> for free this May.<\/p>\n

An essay excerpted from my dissertation, “Learning from Jess’s When a Young Lad Dreams of Manhood… <\/em>(c. 1958),”<\/a> has been published on the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery’s collections website.<\/p>\n

I am working on a publication for my exhibition That Directionless Light of the Future: Rediscovering Russell FitzGerald<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>with Information Office<\/a>, Vancouver. It will have image reproductions, an extended version of my curatorial essay, and shorter texts by Dodie Bellamy, Jamie Parra, and others. Coming spring\/summer 2026.<\/p>\n

I co-curated the pop-up queer video projection and storefront exhibition project Galerie des glaces \/ Hall of Mirrors<\/em><\/a> with artist Daniel Barrow in Montr\u00e9al’s gay village from February 28 \u2013 March 14, 2026. Artists: Glenn Gear, Francisco Gonz\u00e1lez-Rosas, Nelson Henricks, Philippe Internoscia, lamathilde, Jenny Lin + Eloisa Aquino (B&D Press), Dayna McLeod, Johnny Forever Nawracaj, Pompom Palace Presents (Bernadette Houde + Amy Fung), Aaron Pollard, Jamie Ross + Esther Splett, Jo Reid S\u00e9vigny, Santiago Tamayo Soler, and Antoine Vogler. I assisted editor Christopher House on the anthology Still With Us: Stories of HIV\/AIDS and Dance in Canada<\/em><\/a> (2026), designed by Lisa Kiss and published by Dance Collection Danse, Toronto.<\/p>\n

I presented the four-program film series San Francisco Sexual Babylon<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>at the Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise in Montr\u00e9al from February 9\u201314, 2026.<\/p>\n

I gave a talk, “Learning from San Francisco: From Sexual Freedom to Free Art,”<\/a> in the Art + Architectural History department of Carleton University on Friday, February 6, 2026.<\/p>\n

I wrote a profile of Kyle Alden Martens and B. Brookbank for BlackFlash <\/em><\/a>42.3 (Winter 2026).<\/p>\n

I presented the guest-curated screening San Francisco Sexual Babylon<\/em><\/a> at the ChromaQueer Film + Arts Festival, Ottawa, on November 8, 2025.<\/p>\n

I reviewed Jenine Marsh’s exhibition\u00a0Microcosm\u00a0<\/em>at the Buffalo Institute of Contemporary Art (January 24 \u2013 March 29, 2025) for Border Crossings<\/em><\/a> 168 (September 2025).<\/p>\n

I held the 2024\u201325 General Idea Fellowship<\/a> at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.<\/p>\n

I introduced Charles Atlas’s 1987 film Hail the New Puritan<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, on June 1, 2025.<\/p>\n

I presented on the panel “Public Intimacies: Rethinking Sexology and Sex Ed Media Cultures” (chair: Ankita Deb) at the 2025 Society for Cinema and Media Studies conference<\/a> in Chicago on April 4, 2025.<\/p>\n

I guest-curated five film\/video screenings (which ran from March 20 to April 10, 2025) accompanying the large-scale exhibition\u00a0a field of bloom and hum<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>at the Tang Teaching Museum, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY. On April 5, 2025, I was in coversation with artist-filmmaker Tom Kalin and professor Jamie Parra as part of the museum’s Queer Archives Symposium<\/a> (photos here<\/a>). The film programs were: A Room of One’s Own<\/a>, The Hatred of Capitalism<\/a>, The Dancer from the Dance<\/a>, Eternal Homes of the Transient Heart<\/a>, and\u00a0The Personal Is Political<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I curated the presentation of the exhibition Three Way Mirror: Daniel Barrow, Glenn Gear, Paige Gratland\u00a0<\/em>at the Stewart Hall Art Gallery<\/a> in Pointe Claire, QC, April 13 \u2013 June 22, 2025 (a curatorial tour took place on June 12). The essay is available in the brochure<\/a> and I also wrote the essay<\/a> for their exhibition at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, Kelowna.<\/p>\n

I wrote the texts for K\u00e9vin Blinderman’s exhibition Promise I’ll Be Kind<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Produzentin’s exhibition So Fragile (Proddy in the Potty)<\/em><\/a> at Bonny Poon \/ Conditions, Toronto, February 15 \u2013 March 29, 2025.<\/p>\n

I wrote a short text on John Greyson\u2019s video The World Is Sick (sic)<\/em> for the collection\u00a0Toronto Living with AIDS<\/em><\/a>, edited by Ryan Conrad (Toronto: PUBLIC Books, 2024).<\/p>\n

My essay \u201cTrying to See What Isn\u2019t There\u201d was published in Afterimage<\/em><\/a>51.3 (2024).<\/p>\n

My essay on Gregg Bordowitz’s film\u00a0Fast Trip, Long Drop<\/em>\u00a0was reprinted in\u00a0Little Joe: A book about queers and cinema, mostly<\/em><\/a>, edited by Sam Ashby (London: SPBH Editions, 2024).<\/p>\n

I wrote some of the artist biographies for C. Ondine Chavoya and David Evans Frantz\u2019s exhibition catalogue for Teddy Sandoval and the Butch Gardens School of Art<\/em><\/a> (Los Angeles: Inventory Press with Williams College Museum of Art, Vincent Price Art Museum, and Independent Curators International, 2024).<\/p>\n

My article with August\u00a0Klintberg, \u201cWhy Can\u2019t I Be Two People?: Aleesa Cohene and Benny Nemer\u2019s The Same Problem<\/em>\u201d was published in the Journal of Canadian Art History<\/em><\/a>\u00a043. 1\u20132 (2022) special issue on collaboration edited by Erin Silver and Elizabeth Anne Cavaliere.<\/p>\n

I guest-curated the annual retrospective program\u00a0<\/em>for the 2024 Berlin Porn Film Festival. \u00a0San Francisco Sexual Babylon <\/em><\/a>consisted of six film programs that highlighted the San Francisco Bay Area as the epicenter of the sexual revolution, and a place where artists of all kinds worked to advance sexual liberation. It ran from October 22 \u2013 27 at Kino Moviemento.<\/p>\n

I guest-curated\u00a0That Directionless Light of the Future: Rediscovering Russell FitzGerald<\/em><\/a> from the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery collection at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, which ran from September 3 \u2013 December 8, 2024. The webpage above includes the exhibition brochure, the full curatorial essay, installation shots, and audio of my curatorial tour from the opening reception. There was also a panel in tandem with the show on the topic of “Difficult Kinship”<\/a>\u00a0at UBC on November 22, 2024.<\/p>\n

My essay\u00a0“The End of the Line”<\/a> about Nelson Henricks’ work for was published in the Vid\u00e9ographe online publication accompanying his win of the 2024\u00a0Robert-Forget Award.<\/p>\n

I wrote the text for Kyle Alden Martens’ exhibition\u00a0Spun Through the Heel<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>at Patel Brown, Montreal, April 25 \u2013 June 1, 2024.<\/p>\n

I curated a four-screening series,\u00a0Vibrations for a New People<\/a>, for the Moving Image department of the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, May 3\u20134 (in person) and May 10\u201311, 2024, 7pm. Special guest Glenn Belverio made this blog post<\/a> about it. I also wrote an essay, “Morbid Symptoms<\/a>,” for the Walker’s online Reader.<\/p>\n

My article “‘Landscapes’: Andy Warhol and Victor Hugo’s collaborations in gay sex and art”<\/a> was published in Porn Studies<\/em>\u00a0journal in April 2024.<\/p>\n

I participated in \u00ab Draguer \u00bb le mus\u00e9e et ses sources : la queerness face aux archives<\/em><\/a>, the Centre Pompidou’s Biblioth\u00e8que Kandinsky’s 9th summer school (2023) and its journal <\/a>\u00a0came out in 2024.<\/p>\n

EDITING<\/h2>\n

I edited an anthology of video artist Colin Campbell’<\/a>s scripts and other writings (short fiction, articles, talks, excerpts of his two novels, etc.) for Concordia University Press in 2021 titled More Voice-Over: Colin Campbell Writings<\/em><\/a>. It has been reviewed by Charles Reeve in RACAR<\/a><\/em>, Francisco-Fernando Granados in\u00a0C Magazine<\/em><\/a> and Keith Garebian in Literary Review of Canada<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

I also edited issues #5<\/a> and\u00a0#6<\/a> (2021) of Little Joe\u00a0<\/em>magazine with Sam Ashby.<\/p>\n

CURATING<\/a><\/h2>\n

I co-curated the 68th Flaherty Film Seminar “Queer World-Mending”<\/a>\u00a0with artist Steve Reinke<\/a>, June 17\u201323, 2023 at Skidmore College, NY.
